Canvas Plugin Help

The Planet eStream Canvas Plugin provides a quick and easy way of adding Planet eStream content to your Canvas Virtual Learning Environment. The Plugin can be used to add the following types of Planet eStream content; Recordings, Chapters, Playlists, and Photosets.

Additionally, Video/Audio content can be added to your Planet eStream archive from within Canvas and directly embedded into the Canvas page.

Adding Planet eStream Content to Canvas

  • While Within Canvas, and when editing a page, click the Planet eStream icon, as shown below.
  • A window will open, showing Planet eStream interface.
  • Enter your search terms and click the search icon, or press the enter key, to see the Planet eStream search results. An example of a search result is shown below.
  • Click the title or thumbnail of any search result.
  • The item can then be previewed, if required.
  • To embed the item, click Add to Canvas.
  • The Planet eStream window will close and the item will be added into the text-editor within Canvas, represented by a grey placeholder.
  • To view the item in the Canvas page, click Save or Save & Publish.

How to Add a Planet eStream Chapter to Canvas

  • While Within Canvas, and when editing a page, click the Planet eStream icon, as shown below.
  • A window will open, showing Planet eStream interface.
  • Enter your search terms and click the search icon, or press the enter key, to see the Planet eStream search results. An example of a search result is shown below.
  • Any search result for an item that contains Chapters will include a clickable Show Chapters icon.
  • Click the icon to view the Chapters present for the item.
  • To preview a Chapter, click the Preview option.
  • To embed a Chapter, click Add to Canvas.
  • The Planet eStream window will close and the item will be added into the text-editor within Canvas, represented by a grey placeholder.
  • To view the item in the Canvas page, click Save or Save & Publish.

Uploading New Video/Audio Content

  • While Within Canvas, and when editing a page, click the Planet eStream icon, as shown below.
  • A window will open, showing Planet eStream interface.
  • Click the Upload link at the top of the page.
  • An upload form will be displayed.
  • Browse for a file to upload and complete the remainder of the form.
  • Click Upload File button at the bottom of the upload form.
  • Once the upload has completed, a confirmation dialogue will be displayed. Click OK.
  • The Planet eStream window will close and the item will be added into the text-editor within Canvas, represented by a grey placeholder.
  • To view the item in the Canvas page, click Save or Save & Publish.
  • The Canvas page will show a placeholder while the item is being processed. Once processing is complete, the placeholder will be replaced with a media player containing the uploaded item.

Integrating with Canvas Gradebook

  • By selecting a Planet eStream Quiz as the submission type for a Canvas assignment, it is possible for students to take the quiz and for those answers to automatically be posted back to the Canvas Gradebook.
  • Create a new assignment in Canvas. Set the 'Points' field to 100 and the 'Display Grade As' field to 'Percentage'. It's very important to use percentage as this is how the scores are returned.
  • When selecting the 'Submission Type', choose 'External Tool', click the 'Find' button and select 'Planet eStream'.
  • This will load the plugin window. Now, search for the Planet eStream quiz you wish to embed.
  • You can drag the pop-up window to increase the size, which may help with navigation. We recommend using the 'Has Quizzes' filter to easily find videos that have quizzes attached to them.
  • Click the small 'Q' icon next to the quiz video, then click the name of the quiz to select it. Once the plugin window closes, click 'Select'.
  • Finish creating the assignment, then save and publish.
  • When a student completes, the quiz, a small pop-up notification will let them know that their score has been submitted.
  • If you now check the gradebook, you'll see that the score for the assignment has been automatically submitted.
  • Note: free text questions will not be counted towards the final grade. In this example, the quiz had 4 questions, but 1 was a free text question. The student got 2/3 answers correct, so the score has been set to 67%, rounded up from 66.6%.
