Moodle Repository Plugin

Please note: The Planet eStream Moodle Repository plugin has been superseded by the new Planet eStream Text Editor Plugins. If a Planet eStream icon appears within the text editor in Moodle then please see the following help document Moodle Text Editor Plugins.

The Planet eStream Moodle Repository Plugin provides a quick and easy way of adding Planet eStream content to your Moodle Virtual Learning Environment. The Plugin can be used to add the following types of Planet eStream content; Recordings, Chapters, Playlists, and Photosets.

Planet eStream content can either be added directly on a page within Moodle (in a summary), or on a page of its own (as an activity or resource).

The Plugin can also be used to upload video/audio content and embed the content directly into a Moodle page.

This help page refers to Categories, however on your system Categories have been renamed to Departments.

How to Add Planet eStream Content in a Summary

  • Firstly, enable editing within Moodle by clicking the Turn editing on link.

  • Click any Edit summary icon. The text editor will be displayed.

  • Within the text editor click the Moodle Media icon. This will show the Insert / edit embedded media popup. Click Find or upload a sound, video or applet....

  • Within the File picker, click the Planet eStream Search link. You will be presented with a search box and options, as shown below.

    Enter your search terms and click the Search button to view the results.

    The following options are available from the Search Page:

    • Select the types of content that your search results should contain; All, Videos Only, Playlists Only, or Photosets Only.

    • Choose the order in which your search results are displayed; Relevance, Date Added, User Rating (Star Ratings), or Popularity.

    • Choose to only view search results from a specific Category.

  • To view more information on any search result, hover your mouse over the title of the result.

    To select the search result that you would like to add to your Summary, click the thumbnail of the result.

    If a search result has Chapters, the Chapters will be shown below the search result when your mouse is hovered over the title of the result. If there are a large number of Chapters, use your mouse wheel to scroll through them. To add a Chapter to your Summary, click the thumbnail of the Chapter.

    Please note: To include Chapters in search results, the Include Chapters option should be ticked before searching.

  • After clicking the thumbnail of an item, a pop-up box will be displayed, as shown below.

  • Click the Select this file button.

  • The Insert / edit embedded media popup will be displayed.

  • Click the Save changes button.

  • The text editor will now include a link to the recording.

  • Click the Save changes button.

    Please note: The link shown in the example above includes the value ?d=520x280. This is the dimensions of the item to be added, as defined by your system administrator. To change this value manually, click the HTML button on the text editor's toolbar, amend all occurrences of the ?d= values to the desired height and width, and then click the Update button.

  • The content will now show in your Summary.

How to Add Planet eStream Content as an Activity or a Resource

  • Firstly, enable editing within Moodle by clicking the Turn editing on link.

  • Click any Add an activity or resource link. The Add an activity or resource window will appear.

  • Within the Add an activity or resource window, click URL and then click the Add button. The Adding a new URL page will be displayed.

  • Enter a name and a description.

  • Click the Choose a link... button in the Content section.

  • Within the File picker, click the Planet eStream Search link. You will be presented with a search box and options, as shown below.

    Enter your search terms and click the Search button to view the results.

    Please note: To include Chapters in search results, the Include Chapters option should be ticked before searching.

  • A pop-up box will be displayed. Click the Select this file button.

    You will be returned to the Adding a new URL page, with the link inserted in the External URL textbox within the Content section.

    Please note: The link shown in the example above includes the value ?d=520x280. This is the dimensions of the item to be added, as defined by your system administrator. This value can be manually edited to change the dimensions of the added item.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save and return to course button.

    The title that you entered above will be shown as the link to the content, as shown below.

    Click the link to view the item.

Uploading New Video/Audio Content

  • Follow the steps above to add a Planet eStream item.

  • Within the file-picker, click the add & embed link.

  • An upload form will be displayed.

  • Browse for a file to upload and complete the remainder of the form.
  • Click Upload File button at the bottom of the upload form.
  • Once the upload has completed, a confirmation dialogue will be displayed. Click OK.
  • The upload form will close and a unique identifier will be entered into the search-box within the file picker.
  • Click the Search button.
  • Click the thumbnail for the uploaded item. This will usually be a placeholder saying Coming Soon.
  • Click Select this file.
  • In the Insert Moodle media window, click Insert.
  • Click Save changes.
  • The Moodle page will show a placeholder while the item is being processed. Once processing is complete, the placeholder will be replaced with a media player containing the uploaded item.
