LAW CAREERS EVENING - Monday 10th January
This is an opportunity to explore Law as a subject to read at university, hear about admissions to Law including information on the LNAT, the diversity of the profession, and what it's really like to be a lawyer.
The Speakers:
Bertie Ford (WW 2009 – 2014) Trainee Solicitor at Herbert Smith Freehills
After graduating with first class honours in English Literature and Philosophy from York, Bertie went on to study the GDL at BPP Law School and has completed 18 months of his traineeship at Herbert Smith Freehills. Bertie will tell us about his experience of the recruitment process and give us some tips on a successful application. Along with an idea of the areas of law one might cover during training.
Liam Porritt (WH 2009 – 2014) Trainee Solicitor at Clifford Chance, Video Creator & Founder
Liam is a trainee solicitor at Clifford Chance. He studied French and Spanish at Trinity College, University of Cambridge and graduated in June 2018 with a Starred First (79%). Obtaining a top-ranking Distinction (76%) in the GDL and ranked joint first in the Jan 2020 Allen & Overy, Baker McKenzie and Clifford Chance LLM CLP cohort (90%). Liam is also a YouTube video creator, the Founder of StudyMojo Ltd and the author of 5 books. He will talk to us about his experiences since leaving Tonbridge including information on conversion courses.
Jonathan Atkinson (PS 2000 – 2005), Barrister, Lamb Building
Jonathan prosecutes and defends in the full range of serious sexual and violent offences. He is recognised in the Legal 500 as one of the leading juniors in Crime on the South-Eastern Circuit. Jonathan has developed a particular expertise in dealing with serious cases involving complex disclosure issues and as a result is regularly instructed by both the prosecution and defence in multi handed and complicated trials, both as led junior and junior alone.
Jonathan regularly receives instruction from a number of other agencies. These include the NCA and the Home Office in relation to Forfeiture and Condemnation hearings and instructions from Sussex Police to advise on applications for Warrants and to act as independent counsel to consider LPP. Jonathan will talk to us about life working in Chambers and the differences between Criminal and Commercial law.
Chris Walsh (PH 1989 – 1994), Partner at Onside Law
Chris is a Partner at Onside Law, one of the leading specialist sports law firms in the world, with its headquarters in London and offices in Geneva, Sydney and Melbourne.
Chris has over 20 years of experience and his long-term clients include the England and Wales Cricket Board and a number of other national and international governing bodies, rights-holders, clubs, sports agencies, broadcasters, sponsors, investors and prominent individuals operating across all the major sports.
In addition to his commercial practice, Chris is Onside Law’s Head of Dispute Resolution, in which capacity he advises a wide range of sport sector and other clients in relation to a variety of domestic and international disputes, as well as on disciplinary and other regulatory matters. Chris is recommended as a leading sports lawyer in all of the independent legal directories. Chris will give us an overview of the sector along with some of his own experiences.
